featuring new dance works by madison pineda bender, justin brock, fernando chonqui, and faith miller

October 14 & 21, 2025 | 7:30 PM | The Dalí Museum, St. Petersburg, FL

about the Event

Momentum Choreographers Showcase: Moving Surreal brings together dance, mural art, and surrealism in an immersive performance experience set within The Dalí Museum’s Outside In exhibition.

Four emerging choreographers—each part of projectALCHEMY’s Momentum Choreographers Mentorship Program—present original works developed through a five-month creative process exploring surrealism, collaboration, and transformation.

Audiences are invited to move through the Museum’s galleries as performance and visual art intertwine—where brushstrokes meet breath, and bodies become living landscapes.

the Momentum Choreographers Mentorship

The Momentum Choreographers Mentorship Program is projectALCHEMY’s initiative to develop the next generation of dance makers. Selected artists receive mentorship in choreography, creative process, and professional development, guided by Artistic Director Alexander Jones.

Through one-on-one mentorship, collaborative dialogue, and interdisciplinary exploration, artists deepen their craft and share their original work in performance. Momentum is both a platform and a laboratory—fostering community, risk-taking, and transformation.

Artistic Statement: “put yourself in her shoes” explores the idea of multiple dimensions and my curiosity about how we might exist differently across infinite possibilities. In one world, time may move faster; in another, our roles may shift. Drawn to both the intrigue and the unease of these possibilities, I set myself and my dancers on an exploration of interchangeability—transforming into one another through portals in space, altering the invisible strings that generate new consequences, and existing together in a multiplicity of worlds.

In my work, I invite you to see repetition as interconnected timelines, exploring deja-vu as a portal to a familiar place. Fragments of our recorded voices weave through the music, layering sound with echoes of alternate selves, and our spatial pathways alter the result of our experiences, allowing us to fall in and out of timelines and disrupt our realities.

Amid these infinite variations, connecting to one another remains consistent, suggesting that across every world, in some form, we are always meant to find one another.

  • justin brock

Artistic Statement: “Undergrowth Implosion” portrays the journey of a queer individual, symbolized by a spider, who enters a colony of ants; a community that may seem indifferent or unaccepting. The spider, like Salvador Dalí's chaotic yet sacred art, embodies a sense of personal identity that is both complex and vital. This mirrors the work of Lauren Ys, whose murals blend queer media, their heritage, and surrealism to create a similar chaotic beauty that reflects the sacredness of identity. Initially misunderstood, the spider is attacked by the ants but re-emerges, quietly taking the queen’s place. Rather than seeking revenge, the spider subtly rebuilds the colony, forming deep, individual connections with each ant. In the end, the spider’s departure leaves a lasting imprint, and the ants are left with this evening of hope. Creating this piece was a process of coming to terms with my desire to be apart of something where creativity  is encouraged and feeling safe is a necessity. Showing how your own madness is sacred to your growth as an artist and person  without changing to the norms of a “colony” you don’t feel welcome into. This work encapsulates a transformation of self, acceptance, and quiet resilience.

  • fernando chonqui

Artistic Statement: “Re-defining” is a conscious intention settling the craving for a creative outlet to deal with the heavy reality of the current global environment. It is also a vehicle to rekindle my relationship with dance, accepting the ever-shifting complexity of human desire and artistic expression.

It’s also a public-personal journey. The juxtaposition of creating something personal to present to an external audience creates an internal kinesthetic reaction to childhood memories, which serves as the inspiration for the movement by deconstructing the ideas and motifs behind the physical “reactions”.

My hope for this piece is for the audience to embark on the “vehicle” and move with me through the journey of kinesthetic exploration. I hope the audience can move with me through feelings of joy, fear, and sadness while honoring the perplexity of finding “acceptance.”

“And, when you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.” ― Paulo Coelho, The Alchemist

  • faith miller

Artistic Statement:My new work, titled “Vesper,” is my interpretation of how love can be both intoxicating and unsettling: a force that shapes, unravels, and ultimately reveals us. This duet is inspired by the passionate and complex relationship between Salvador Dalí and his wife and muse, Gala, and draws on Argentine tango to reflect the tension, passion, and complexity of a tethered bond.

I was drawn to the imperfect side of their story. When I started this mentorship, old relationship patterns I thought I’d outgrown resurfaced. I wanted to create this piece because, in researching Dali and Gala’s story, I found myself relating to Dali’s passion for love. How it inspired his art but also became consuming . Creating this piece has been healing. It’s allowed me to step into a character inspired by Gala. Someone bold, unapologetic, and free in ways I’m learning to embrace.

I admire how deeply Gala saw Dalí. Despite their toxicity, they shaped and in many ways healed each other. One story that stayed with me was how Dalí suffered uncontrollable laughing fits that everyone saw as madness. After meeting Gala, they stopped. She understood he was just deeply socially anxious. In many ways, Antonio, my duet partner, mirrored that same sense of being seen, but as an artist. His belief in this piece, especially when I struggled to see it myself, reminded me how powerful that kind of support can be. Making this duet has made me realize creating returns me to feeling like myself again and I am forever grateful to have this as an outlet.

Dalí once wrote, “It is mostly with your blood, Gala, that I paint my pictures.” In this duet, I hope to echo that kind of devotion: raw, imperfect, and real.

Choreographer: Justin Brock
Dancers: Sam Kedziora, Zariah Wright, Mackenzie McLean, Antonio Hernandez
Music: Origamibiro — Womb Duvet, Odham’s Standard, Attract/Repel, Cracked Mirrors And Stopped Clocks

About the Work

In Undergrowth Implosion, a queer individual—embodied as a spider—enters a colony of ants: a community both fascinated and threatened by difference. Initially met with resistance, the spider endures, forming connections that shift the colony’s internal rhythm. Inspired by Salvador Dalí’s surreal forms and Lauren Ys’s queer mural aesthetics, the piece explores identity as both sacred and chaotic.
The work’s closing image—a quiet act of coexistence—reflects transformation, empathy, and the lasting imprint of authenticity.

About the Work

put yourself in her shoes imagines a world where multiple dimensions collide—a playful meditation on time, identity, and the interconnectedness of all beings. Through repetition, vocal layering, and live instrumental performance, the work invites audiences to witness shifting realities. Each scene becomes a portal to a parallel version of the same story, where roles reverse and meaning reshapes itself in real time.

Special Thanks

Thank you to my incredible dancers and dear friends, Nicholas Garlo, Shelby Russ. Thank you for your amazing minds and support during this process. I couldn’t create this work without your collaboration and dedication.

Endless thanks to my husband, David Bender, for arranging the Tchaikovsky piece for Cello and Bass, and to Ryan Sujdak for performing alongside him.

Lastly, a huge thank you to the generous studios—Centerstage Dance Academy, A & G Dance Company, FYI Dance Company and West Florida Dance Center—for allowing us to workshop and rehearse in your spaces.

Note from the Artistic Director

I invite you to walk with me through this Outside In exhibit tonight here at The Dalí—not just to witness an evening of dance in front of murals, no, this is much more than that.

Tonight, we observe worlds riffing off of worlds riffing off of worlds: moving bodies in conversation with still ones—all a vehicle to move you to feeling.

I invite you, for a moment, to open yourself and listen with your whole body—see, hear, feel—as I have for the last five months while watching four incredible dance makers uncover what has taken root for them in their creative process.

I will be your guide as we venture through rooms, in and out of portals, and see familiar spaces transform in real time.

To the 2025 Momentum Artists—I am beyond honored to be a witness to your process and I thank you for sharing your embodied experiences with me and this community.

And to you, the watcher—you are now a witness to a dance maker’s process in real time.
